TYPEFACES:
Typefaces are usually
available in sizes ranging from 6 point to 72
point. Caution: A type size cannot be measure
from top to bottom. Some letters may not use the
full point size. For example, a 12 point image may
only be 10 points in height. Also letters within
the same size type may vary in size if the font is
different. All of the examples above are 12 point.
Words you may want to
know: Letterspacing - space between
letters Line spacing - space between
lines Serif - the letters contain small
decorative lines as embellishment. Times New
Roman is a serif font. Sans
serif - the letters have no serif (small
decorative lines) and are usually even in weight
throughout the letter.Arial Narrow is an
example of Sans serif.
So What Is
Typesetting?
Typesetting is the actual
production of type. Some methods of typesetting
include:
- Cast metal (hot type)
- Cold Type (typewriter or
strike-on)
- Photographic
- Digital or digital
imaging
Digital imaging creates
type and images using dots on some type of
substrate such as paper. Adobe's
PostScriptâ produces digital type.
Digital fonts are either: Postscript, Type 1,
TrueType, or Bitmap.
